    Early Life and Education

Fionnghuala Manon Flanagan was born on December 10, 1941, in Dublin, Ireland. Her parents were Rosanna and Terence Flanagan, the latter an Irish Army officer. She grew up with four siblings in a bilingual household where both English and Irish were spoken. Flanagan attended schools in Ireland, England and Switzerland before pursuing formal acting training at the Abbey Theatre School in Dublin. She also studied at London’s Old Vic, developing a foundation in classical theater that would shape her professional career.

    Film Career

Flanagan made her film debut in 1967, portraying Gerty MacDowell in Joseph Strick’s adaptation of James Joyce’s “Ulysses.” She followed with a role in John Huston’s 1969 historical comedy “Sinful Davey.” Although she concentrated primarily on stage and television work during the 1970s, Flanagan appeared in Peter Werner’s short film “In the Region of Ice,” which won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film in 1977. Her early 1980s film credits included “Mr. Patman,” “Through Naked Eyes” and “Reflections.” In 1985, she starred in “James Joyce’s Women,” a film adaptation of her acclaimed one-woman stage production, portraying six different women drawn from Joyce’s life and literary works. She subsequently appeared in “Youngblood,” “P.K. and the Kid,” “Mad at the Moon” and “Money for Nothing.” In 1996, she starred opposite Helen Mirren in “Some Mother’s Son,” a drama set during the 1981 Irish hunger strike. Two years later, she appeared in the Irish comedy “Waking Ned,” released in the United States as “Waking Ned Devine.” The film became an international success, and Flanagan shared a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. In 2001, she appeared opposite Nicole Kidman in the supernatural horror film “The Others,” playing the mysterious housekeeper Mrs. Mills. Her performance earned a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress. Her subsequent credits included “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood,” “Tears of the Sun,” “Man About Dog” and the 2005 drama “Transamerica.” Her performance as Elizabeth Schupak in “Transamerica” earned her an Irish Film and Television Award for Best Supporting Actress. She also appeared in John Singleton’s “Four Brothers” (2005), followed by films including “Slipstream,” “Yes Man,” “The Invention of Lying” and “Kill the Irishman.” In 2011, Flanagan portrayed Eileen Boyle in the acclaimed Irish crime comedy “The Guard,” earning another Irish Film and Television Award for Best Supporting Actress. She went on to appear in “Life’s a Breeze,” “Angels Sing,” “Trash Fire” and “Supervized,” and provided voice work for the Oscar-nominated animated film “Song of the Sea.” Her later film credits include “The Man from Rome,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” and “Sight.” In 2024, she starred alongside James McArdle in Darren Thornton’s comedy-drama “Four Mothers,” playing Alma, a woman recovering from a stroke whose son struggles to balance caring for her with his professional ambitions. The film won the Audience Award at the BFI London Film Festival and was released theatrically in 2025. Flanagan received a nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role at the 2026 Irish Film and Television Awards for her performance.

    Television Career

Flanagan made her television debut in the 1966 British series “Broome Stages,” based on the novel by Clemence Dane. After moving to the United States, she began appearing in American television productions, with early credits including “Gunsmoke,” “Bonanza,” “Mannix” and “The Rookies.” Her major television breakthrough came in 1976 when she played Clothilde in the ABC miniseries “Rich Man, Poor Man.” The performance earned her the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Single Performance by a Supporting Actress in a Comedy or Drama Series. She subsequently starred as Molly Culhane in the Western series “How the West Was Won,” receiving a 1978 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. During the 1970s and 1980s, Flanagan also appeared in television films including “The Legend of Lizzie Borden,” “Nightmare in Badham County,” “Mary White,” “Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure” and “A Winner Never Quits.” Her television work continued through the 1990s with guest roles on “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” “Murder, She Wrote” and “Poltergeist: The Legacy.” In the early 2000s, she appeared in the HBO film “For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story” and made guest appearances on “Star Trek: Enterprise,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “Nip/Tuck.” In 2006, she joined the Showtime crime drama “Brotherhood,” portraying Rose Caffee, the matriarch of a politically connected Irish-American family in Rhode Island. The series ran for three seasons, and Flanagan received an Irish Film and Television Award nomination and won a Satellite Award for her performance. From 2007 to 2010, she played Eloise Hawking on the ABC mystery series “Lost.” Her character became central to the show’s complicated mythology involving time travel, the Dharma Initiative and the island’s history. Flanagan subsequently had recurring roles on Syfy’s “Defiance” and the BBC drama “Redwater.” She also appeared in “American Gods” and “Origin.” Her television work in the 2020s included the Irish dramas “Smother” and “SisterS,” as well as Netflix’s mystery comedy “Bodkin,” in which she portrayed Mother Bernadette. In 2025, she contributed voice work to the series “Small Town, Big Story.” The following year, she appeared in the fifth season of the Irish comedy “The Young Offenders,” playing Bridget MacSweeney.

    Stage Career

Flanagan began her professional acting career onstage, making her theatrical debut in the lead role of the Irish-language play “An Triail” in 1964. After moving to the United States, she made her Broadway debut in 1968 in Brian Friel’s “Lovers.” During the 1970s, she appeared in productions including “The Incomparable Max” and “Ulysses in Nighttown,” earning her first Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play in 1974. In 1977, she created and starred in “James Joyce’s Women,” a one-woman production featuring six female characters from Joyce’s life and fiction. The play earned critical acclaim and became one of her signature theatrical achievements, eventually inspiring the 1985 film adaptation. Flanagan returned to Broadway in 2018 in Jez Butterworth’s “The Ferryman,” directed by Sam Mendes. Her performance as Aunt Maggie Far Away earned her a second Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play in 2019. She continued performing in theater into her 80s, appearing in a 2024 production of John B. Keane’s “Sive” at Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre. During the engagement, she was honored with a bronze handprint outside the theater in recognition of her contributions to Irish acting. She has also received multiple Irish Film and Television Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012.

    Personal Life

In 1972, Flanagan married Irish psychiatrist and addiction specialist Garrett O’Connor. O’Connor was involved in Irish nationalist causes and became a prominent figure in addiction treatment, serving as the founding president of the Betty Ford Institute. The couple lived in the Los Angeles area for decades and were known for hosting gatherings attended by members of the Irish community and entertainment industry. They remained married until O’Connor’s death in September 2015. Flanagan has maintained close ties to Ireland throughout her career and has been an advocate for Irish cultural identity and the arts. After living in California for more than five decades, she returned to Ireland, settling in County Wicklow.

    Real Estate

In 1972, Fionnula Flanagan and Garrett O’Connor purchased a home in Beverly Hills, California, for $41,000. The property, situated near Benedict Canyon and Mulholland Drive, became their longtime residence and a gathering place for friends and members of the Irish community in Los Angeles. Flanagan retained ownership of the house following her husband’s death in 2015. In December 2024, she listed the property for sale with an asking price of $2.8 million. She subsequently sold the residence as part of her relocation to Ireland, although the final sale price has not been publicly confirmed. In 2020, Flanagan also purchased a home in Rancho Mirage, California, for $522,000. From a Dublin stage debut in 1964 to an award nomination in 2026, Fionnula Flanagan’s six-decade career — and her $4 million fortune — were built the old-fashioned way: one acclaimed performance at a time.
