Early Life
Sanders was born on 22 June 1991 in Frankenthal, Germany, to a German mother and an African-American father, and was raised in Columbia, South Carolina. She was spotted at just 13 by agent Sheilah Dixon of Millie Lewis Columbia; after a test shoot, her photographs were sent to New York, launching her career.
Her nickname, “Golden Barbie,” grew out of two childhood names: a teacher who called her “Goldilocks” for her curly hair, and friends who said she resembled a life-size Barbie doll. It later became her social media handle and professional brand.

Career
Sanders began with brands aimed at younger audiences — Seventeen, Free People, Nike and ALDO — before shifting to high fashion with a runway walk for Miu Miu’s Spring/Summer 2016 show. She has since worked across the industry’s full range: campaigns for luxury houses including Bvlgari and Roberto Cavalli, runway for Moschino, Ralph Lauren, DKNY and Jeremy Scott, editorials in American, Italian and British Vogue, Glamour and GQ, and commercial work for Victoria’s Secret PINK, Gap and American Eagle.
A defining milestone came in 2019, when she appeared in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and was named Rookie of the Year. She returned to grace the cover of the 2020 issue alongside Kate Bock and Olivia Culpo. On Instagram, where she posts as @goldenbarbie, she has amassed around 6 million followers. In 2017 she became a spokesmodel for Reebok and designed her own sneaker, launched that December; she is also recognised as a muse of makeup artist Pat McGrath.
Beyond modelling, Sanders has served as a special correspondent on NBC’s “Extra,” guest-judged “America’s Next Top Model” and “American Beauty Star,” competed on VH1’s “Hip-Hop Squares,” and acted in films including “School Dance” (2014) and “Glosses” (2016).
Personal Life
Sanders is known for a disciplined approach to health and fitness, and has spoken about cutting alcohol, soda, pasta and fried foods from her diet in favour of lean proteins such as fish and chicken, alongside regular workouts and stretching. From 2016 to 2018 she was in a relationship with actor and television personality Terrence Jenkins, known as Terrence J. She keeps much of her personal life private.
Sanders’ route from teen model to high-fashion and swimwear star follows a path shared by other models who built multimedia careers, including Hailey Clauson, Natasha Poly and Selita Ebanks.
