    Quick Facts

Full name Macaulay Carson Culkin (legally Macaulay Macaulay Culkin Culkin since 2019)
Born August 26, 1980, Manhattan, New York City
    Occupation Actor
Known for “Home Alone,” “Home Alone 2,” “My Girl,” “Richie Rich”
Net worth $40 million (Celebrity Net Worth estimate)

    Early Life

Macaulay Carson Culkin was born on August 26, 1980, in Manhattan, New York City. His father, Christopher “Kit” Culkin, was a former Broadway actor, while his mother, Patricia Brentrup, worked as a telephone operator. His parents never married and raised seven children together in a small Manhattan apartment. Several of Macaulay’s siblings later became actors, most notably Kieran Culkin and Rory Culkin.

Culkin was raised Catholic and attended St. Joseph’s School of Yorkville before transferring to the Professional Children’s School, which catered to young performers. He began acting professionally at around four years old, appearing in stage productions, television programs, and commercials before moving into feature films.

    Child Stardom and Movie Salaries

Culkin appeared in several small film and television roles before attracting widespread attention in 1989’s “Uncle Buck.” Playing the precocious Miles Russell opposite John Candy, Culkin demonstrated the rapid-fire comedic timing that would soon make him an international star. Writer and producer John Hughes subsequently helped cast him as Kevin McCallister in “Home Alone.” Released in 1990, the comedy became a global blockbuster, grossing roughly $477 million worldwide and turning Culkin into one of the most recognizable children on the planet. He received a Golden Globe nomination for his performance.

Culkin followed “Home Alone” with “My Girl,” in which he played Thomas J. Sennett, and reprised Kevin McCallister in “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.” The sequel was another enormous commercial success. In 1993, Culkin took a dramatic turn opposite Elijah Wood in “The Good Son,” playing a deeply disturbed child in a role designed to challenge his wholesome public image. His other early-1990s projects included “The Nutcracker,” “Getting Even with Dad,” “The Pagemaster,” and “Richie Rich.” By that point, however, Culkin had been working almost continuously for years and was increasingly unhappy with the demands being placed on him. After “Richie Rich,” he stepped away from acting and returned to school.

His major childhood film paydays were approximately: “Uncle Buck” (1989): $40,000; “Home Alone” (1990): $100,000; “My Girl” (1991): $1 million; “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” (1992): $4.5 million base salary, approximately $20 million including estimated backend and merchandising; “The Good Son” (1993): $1.5 million; “Getting Even with Dad” (1994): $8 million; “Richie Rich” (1994): $8 million.

His base salaries from those seven films totaled approximately $23.14 million. Decades later, Culkin revealed that his “Home Alone 2” contract was even more lucrative than previously known. In addition to his $4.5 million salary, he said his deal included what he described as 5% of the film’s “net” and 15% of merchandising. That merchandising participation was particularly notable because the film spawned the enormously popular Talkboy toy. Culkin’s exact backend earnings have never been publicly disclosed, but those additional terms likely pushed his eventual “Home Alone 2” haul to roughly $20 million, and his total earnings from those projects to approximately $38.64 million.

Parents, Trust Fund, and Financial Dispute

As Culkin’s career exploded, his father became heavily involved in managing his career. By Culkin’s mid-teens, his earnings had reportedly accumulated into a trust worth somewhere in the range of $15 million to $20 million.

When his parents separated in the mid-1990s, their custody battle became intertwined with questions about control of Macaulay’s fortune. The situation generated years of headlines claiming that Culkin had emancipated himself or “divorced” his parents. Culkin has since said that description was inaccurate. He explained that he instead went to court to remove both his father’s and mother’s names from his trust fund and replace them with an independent executor. He later said the decision was intended to prevent either parent from gaining control of his money while they were fighting with each other. According to Culkin, once neither parent stood to control the trust, the dispute ended much more quickly.

Return to Acting and Other Projects

Culkin began cautiously returning to entertainment in the late 1990s. He appeared in Sonic Youth’s music video for “Sunday” and performed onstage in London’s West End production of “Madame Melville.” His first major adult film role came in 2003’s “Party Monster,” in which he portrayed real-life New York club promoter Michael Alig. The following year, Culkin appeared in the cult comedy “Saved!” alongside Jena Malone and Mandy Moore. He also performed extensive voice work on “Robot Chicken,” published the semi-autobiographical novel “Junior” in 2006, and appeared in films including “Sex and Breakfast” and “The Wrong Ferrari.”

Culkin later became involved in intentionally offbeat projects that played with his former child-star image. In 2013, he helped form The Pizza Underground, a comedy band that performed pizza-themed parodies of Velvet Underground songs. He also launched Bunny Ears, a satirical lifestyle website, podcast, and media brand.

In 2018, Culkin returned to the role of Kevin McCallister for Google’s “Home Alone Again with the Google Assistant” advertising campaign. The commercial recreated scenes from “Home Alone” with an adult Kevin using smart-home technology instead of homemade traps. Although the campaign generated enormous attention, Culkin’s compensation was never publicly confirmed.

His acting career became more active again with Seth Green’s “Changeland” in 2019 and a prominent role in “American Horror Story: Double Feature” in 2021. He subsequently appeared in “The Righteous Gemstones” and voiced a character in Kid Cudi’s animated project “Entergalactic.” In 2023, Culkin received the 2,765th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the Motion Pictures category. His “Home Alone” co-star Catherine O’Hara was among the speakers at the ceremony. Culkin later joined the second season of Prime Video’s “Fallout,” playing the Caesar’s Legion figure Lacerta Legate. He also voiced Cattrick Lynxley in Disney’s “Zootopia 2,” appearing in the same animated family as his longtime partner Brenda Song. In 2019, Culkin legally changed his middle name following an online fan vote. His full legal name became Macaulay Macaulay Culkin Culkin.

    Personal Life

Culkin married actress Rachel Miner in 1998 when both were teenagers. They separated in 2000 and divorced in 2002. He subsequently had a long-term relationship with Mila Kunis. The pair began dating in 2002 and remained together for roughly eight years. Despite persistent tabloid reports during their relationship, Kunis publicly denied that she and Culkin were engaged.

In 2017, Culkin began dating actress Brenda Song after the two worked together on “Changeland.” Their first son, Dakota, was born in 2021 and was named after Culkin’s sister Dakota, who died in 2008. Their second son, Carson, was born in 2022. Culkin and Song became engaged in 2022.

    Real Estate

In 1999, when he was just 19 years old, Culkin paid approximately $1.75 million for a full-floor loft in Manhattan’s Noho neighborhood. The roughly 4,800-square-foot residence had three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a large open living area. Culkin held onto the property for more than 25 years before selling it for $7.75 million in 2025, producing a gross gain of approximately $6 million.

In 2022, Culkin and Brenda Song paid $8 million for a roughly 4,900-square-foot estate in the Toluca Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles. The seller was Kiefer Sutherland, who had owned the property for about a decade. Culkin and Song sold the Toluca Lake estate in February 2026 for $14.25 million in an off-market transaction, roughly $6.25 million more than they had paid less than four years earlier. Soon afterward, they paid $10.3 million for a considerably larger home in Sherman Oaks, California. The approximately 10,200-square-foot mansion contains six bedrooms and nine bathrooms, along with a home theater, gym, sports court, swimming pool, spa, outdoor entertaining areas, and a pizza oven.
