Le’Veon Bell Earned $45 Million In The NFL — Now He’s Cashing Out His Pension Just To Keep Up With Child Support

Le’Veon Bell once had the kind of paycheck most football fans only dream about. During his NFL career, he pulled in close to $45 million. At his best, he was one of the most dangerous running backs in the league. He signed a record-setting deal at his position. He even turned down a guaranteed $14.5 million salary because he believed a bigger contract was waiting for him.

Seven years later, Bell is facing a completely different kind of money problem — one that has nothing to do with contract negotiations and everything to do with keeping up with his bills.

The former Pittsburgh Steelers star was arrested in Ohio over the weekend on a Michigan warrant tied to unpaid child support. What makes the story even more jarring is what his attorney revealed: Bell had already cashed out part of his NFL pension roughly six months earlier just to make a $50,000 child support payment.

    What Happened During The Arrest

Bell was in the Canton, Ohio area for a meet-and-greet event at a local shopping mall when police stepped in and took him into custody. According to Stark County records, the arrest was logged as a “courtesy hold for another agency.” In plain terms, that means Ohio police weren’t the ones pursuing him — they were holding him on behalf of Michigan authorities.

The Michigan Attorney General’s Office reportedly got involved because of how large the outstanding balance had become.

Why His Payments Don’t Match His Current Income

Bell’s attorney, Thomas Shaffer, says the real issue isn’t that his client refuses to pay child support. It’s that the payments are still being calculated based on Bell’s old NFL salary — money he hasn’t earned in years.

“Six months ago, he cashed in an NFL pension to pay $50,000 in child support for that child,” Shaffer told the Canton Repository.

Shaffer called the situation a “revolving door.” His argument is straightforward: Bell hasn’t played in an NFL game since 2021, and nothing he’s done since then — music, boxing, appearances — comes close to matching what he made as a professional athlete. Yet his support obligations are still calculated as if he’s still cashing NFL checks.

That gap between old income and current reality is what pushed Bell to dip into retirement money most people wouldn’t touch until much later in life.

From $44.8 Million In Career Earnings To Pension Withdrawals

The pension detail stands out even more when you look at what Bell actually earned on the field.

Between 2013 and 2021, Bell collected $44.8 million in NFL salary. That’s a staggering number for anyone, let alone someone who’s now been forced to pull from retirement savings to stay current on child support.

Of course, gross career earnings rarely tell the full story. Taxes alone can eat up a huge share of an athlete’s paycheck. Add in agent commissions, training and travel costs, legal fees, real estate, and years of everyday spending, and it’s easy to see how a $45 million career doesn’t always translate into $45 million in the bank.

Still, Bell’s financial story is unusual for one specific reason: he didn’t just earn $45 million. He also walked away from an extra $14.5 million — voluntarily.

The Holdout That Made NFL History

Bell became a household name in football after the Steelers picked him in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

From 2014 to 2017, he built a resume most running backs never come close to matching — three Pro Bowl selections and two First-team All-Pro honors. His rare ability to both run and catch out of the backfield made him one of the most valuable offensive weapons in the league.

In 2017, Bell played under the franchise tag for $12.1 million. Heading into 2018, he wanted a long-term deal loaded with guaranteed money. Instead, Pittsburgh slapped a second franchise tag on him worth roughly $14.5 million.

    Bell said no.

He held out for the entire 2018 season. Every week he stayed away from the team, he gave up close to $853,000 in salary. By the time the season ended, he had forfeited the full $14.5 million tag — one of the boldest financial gambles in modern NFL history.

A Gamble That Didn’t Pay Off The Way He Hoped

For a moment, it looked like the bet had paid off. In 2019, Bell signed a four-year, $52.5 million contract with the New York Jets. But that headline number was misleading from the start.

The Jets cut him after just 17 games, during which he earned around $27.5 million — a fraction of what the deal was supposed to be worth over its full length.

After New York, Bell moved through a string of short stints with the Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played his final NFL snap in January 2022.

Once his playing career ended, Bell pivoted toward music and boxing. His biggest moment in the ring came in 2022, when he knocked out fellow former NFL running back Adrian Peterson in a celebrity exhibition bout.

Bell Is Facing More Than Just A Child Support Case

The Michigan warrant isn’t the only legal trouble hanging over Bell right now.

In 2025, a jury awarded one of Bell’s cousins $25 million in a civil lawsuit alleging sexual assault dating back to when Bell was a minor. That judgment came after a default ruling, issued when Bell failed to respond to the lawsuit in time.

Bell’s legal team has denied the allegations. They argue he was never properly served with the lawsuit and are working to get the judgment overturned.

That case is completely separate from the Michigan child support matter that led to his arrest in Ohio.

    What’s Still Unclear

    Several details remain unknown, including:

    • The exact amount Bell allegedly owed when the Michigan warrant was issued
    • Whether a court will agree to lower his ongoing child support payments to reflect his current, post-NFL income
    • How long the pension-related financial strain has been building behind the scenes

    The Bottom Line

Bell’s story is a sharp reminder of how fast an athlete’s financial picture can change once the paychecks stop. A player who once turned down a guaranteed $14.5 million salary because he believed he was worth more is now cashing out retirement funds to keep up with court-ordered payments.

Whether a judge agrees to recalculate his child support based on his current earnings remains to be seen. For now, Le’Veon Bell’s financial reality looks nothing like it did during his peak NFL years — and this latest arrest makes that gap impossible to ignore.
