Toni Braxton is one of the best-selling R&B singers of all time. Her voice, her Grammy wins, and hits like “Un-Break My Heart” made her a household name in the 1990s. But behind the fame, Braxton has faced a financial story that doesn’t match her success on the charts.

She has filed for bankruptcy twice. She has been hit with tax liens from both the IRS and California’s Franchise Tax Board more than once. And as of August 2026, state records still show her owing hundreds of thousands of dollars.

So how does someone who sold nearly 70 million records end up in this position? The answer says a lot about how the music industry pays its biggest stars — and how quickly wealth can slip away, even for a superstar.

A $600,000 Federal Tax Bill Just Got Resolved

According to a recent TMZ report, Braxton settled a federal tax debt worth almost $600,000. Records show the IRS filed a lien against her in June 2026, claiming she owed:

    • $69,390 for the 2022 tax year
    • $278,876 for the 2023 tax year
    • $250,358 for the 2024 tax year

That adds up to $598,624 in unpaid federal taxes. A representative for Braxton confirmed to TMZ that the debt has now been paid off.

That’s good news for the singer. But it’s also just the latest chapter in a financial saga that stretches back nearly 30 years.

How Does a Superstar End Up Broke?

In January 1998, Braxton filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. The timing seemed impossible to believe. Her self-titled debut album in 1993 had been a hit, and her 1996 follow-up, Secrets, turned her into a global star with singles like “You’re Makin’ Me High” and “Un-Break My Heart.”

By the time she filed for bankruptcy, her first two albums had sold more than 15 million copies combined and pulled in an estimated $170 million or more in sales. So where did all that money go?

The Real Problem: Her Record Deal

Much of the answer comes down to her contract. A month before her bankruptcy filing, Braxton sued her label, LaFace Records, and its parent company, Arista Records, trying to get out of her deal. Her legal team argued that despite generating massive revenue for the label, she was earning less than 35 cents in royalties per album sold.

Years later, Braxton revealed just how small her payout really was. After her first album became a hit, she said her royalty check came out to only $1,972.

Here’s why: like many artists signed to major labels in that era, Braxton received advances to cover things like recording costs, music videos, wardrobe, promotion, and touring. Those advances weren’t free money — they had to be recouped from her royalties before she saw a dime. That meant an artist could sell millions of records and still technically owe the label money.

Her Own Spending Habits Played a Role Too

Braxton has openly admitted that her lifestyle contributed to her financial troubles. After becoming famous, she developed a taste for high-end furniture, designer clothing, and luxury home goods.

Her spending became public knowledge after an awkward interview on The Oprah Winfrey Show, where Oprah questioned her about buying items like Gucci silverware. Braxton later said she felt the interview was used to embarrass her, and that it changed the public’s perception of her for years afterward.

    The Comeback That Almost Worked

Braxton eventually settled her legal dispute with LaFace and clawed her way back. In 2000, she released The Heat, which sold millions of copies and produced the hit single “He Wasn’t Man Enough.” She kept working — recording, touring, acting, and even performing on Broadway — and for a while, her finances looked stable again.

In 2006, she landed what should have been a dream deal: a Las Vegas residency called Toni Braxton: Revealed at the Flamingo. Residencies are often ideal for established stars because they bring in steady income without the huge travel costs of a full tour.

Instead, it helped set up her next financial collapse.

Health Issues Trigger a Second Bankruptcy

In 2008, health problems forced Braxton to cancel her Vegas show. She later said the cancellation left her on the hook for significant financial obligations tied to the production. With no residency income and expenses still piling up, her finances fell apart quickly.

By 2010, the IRS filed a lien claiming she owed roughly $396,000 in unpaid federal taxes.

That same year, she filed for bankruptcy a second time.

    Bankruptcy Round Two: 2010

In October 2010, Braxton filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy again. Court filings listed her assets between $1 million and $10 million, while her liabilities were listed between $10 million and $50 million. Her creditors included the IRS, banks, record labels, hotels, and retailers.

This time, Braxton pointed to her health problems and the collapse of her Vegas residency as the main causes — not her record contract.

She Lost the Rights to 27 Songs

In 2013, as part of her bankruptcy settlement, rights to 27 songs Braxton had co-written went up for sale. She was given the chance to buy them back for $20,000 — but another buyer outbid her, paying $40,000 and taking ownership of her share in songs including “You’re Makin’ Me High,” “How Many Ways,” and “Always.”

She kept the rights to “Un-Break My Heart,” since that song was written by Diane Warren, not Braxton.

Her second bankruptcy officially closed in 2015. It would have been reasonable to assume her financial troubles were finally over.

    They weren’t.

    More Tax Liens Kept Coming

In 2018, Braxton was hit with four separate tax liens covering the 2015 and 2016 tax years — two federal and two from California — adding up to roughly $781,000.

Later that same year, another wave of liens hit: the IRS claimed she owed about $340,000 for 2017, and California’s Franchise Tax Board sought another $116,000, bringing that round to roughly $456,000.

Which brings the story back to today.

    Where Things Stand Now

While Braxton’s federal tax debt from 2022–2024 has reportedly been paid off, California isn’t finished with her yet. The state’s Franchise Tax Board keeps a public list of its 500 largest personal income tax delinquencies. As of its August 6, 2026 update, Braxton was listed with an outstanding balance of $438,406.05.

So the federal problem may be solved, but she still reportedly owes the state of California nearly half a million dollars.

So How Is She Worth $4 Million but Still Owes This Much?

Braxton’s estimated net worth currently sits around $4 million. That raises an obvious question: how can someone worth that much keep ending up in debt to the government?

The answer comes down to a simple truth: net worth and cash on hand are not the same thing. Braxton’s financial history suggests her real issue isn’t a lack of assets — it’s inconsistent income and limited liquidity.

Her real estate history backs this up:

    • In 2014, just a year after resolving major bankruptcy issues, she paid $2.9 million for a 5,323-square-foot home in Calabasas — and sold it in 2016 for $3.4 million.
    • In 2018, she spent a combined $5.3 million on two condos in the same Century City building — $2.75 million for the upper unit and $2.55 million for the one below it.
    • She listed both for sale in 2022. The upper unit sold for $3 million. The lower unit didn’t sell, and property records show she still owns it — she relisted it in May 2026 for $2.675 million.

In other words, Braxton had enough financial stability in 2018 to buy two condos worth a combined $5.3 million. She still owns one worth roughly $2.75 million and sold the other for a $500,000 profit.

    The Bottom Line

Toni Braxton isn’t broke by any traditional definition. She owns valuable property, and she still has real earning power as a performer. But her decades-long pattern of tax liens and two bankruptcies point to a deeper issue: turning big earnings into steady, accessible cash has been a lifelong struggle — even for one of R&B’s biggest stars.
