Roger Taylor net worth is $425 million in 2026, according to Celebrity Net Worth. Best known as the drummer of Queen, Taylor’s role in the band always extended well beyond the drum kit: his powerful backing vocals became an essential part of Queen’s layered harmonies, and he wrote hits including “Radio Ga Ga,” “A Kind of Magic” and “These Are the Days of Our Lives.” As an equal owner in Queen’s companies, he also shared in one of the most valuable music catalog deals ever made.

    Early Life

Roger Meddows Taylor was born on July 26, 1949, in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, England. His family later moved to Cornwall, where he developed an early interest in music. He formed his first band as a child and initially played ukulele and guitar before realizing that drums were his strongest instrument. By his teens, he was performing in semi-professional bands, influenced by drummers including Keith Moon and Mitch Mitchell. Music was not initially his only career option. Taylor moved to London to study dentistry at the London Hospital Medical College but quickly lost interest in the field. He subsequently studied biology at East London Polytechnic and earned a Bachelor of Science degree. By then, his music career was already moving quickly enough that science would not become his profession.

Smile and the Formation of Queen

In 1968, Taylor answered an advertisement placed by guitarist Brian May and singer and bassist Tim Staffell, who were looking for a drummer. The resulting band became Smile. The group developed a following around London and released a small amount of material but never achieved major commercial success. Staffell eventually left, while his friend Freddie Mercury had become an enthusiastic supporter of the band. Mercury joined May and Taylor, pushed the group toward a more theatrical identity, and suggested the name Queen. John Deacon joined on bass in 1971, completing the classic lineup. Taylor and Mercury also shared a stall at London’s Kensington Market during Queen’s lean early years, selling clothing while the band worked to establish itself. Queen released its self-titled debut album in 1973, followed by “Queen II” and “Sheer Heart Attack.” The international breakthrough arrived with 1975’s “A Night at the Opera” and the enormous success of “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

    Queen

Taylor’s drumming became one of the foundations of Queen’s sound, but he also supplied some of the band’s highest and most distinctive backing vocals. His rougher lead voice contrasted dramatically with Mercury’s and May’s, and he sang lead on several of his own compositions, including “I’m in Love with My Car.” He developed steadily as a songwriter throughout Queen’s career. His early compositions included “Modern Times Rock ‘n’ Roll,” “The Loser in the End” and “Sheer Heart Attack.” By the 1980s, Taylor was responsible for some of Queen’s biggest international hits. “Radio Ga Ga,” released on 1984’s “The Works,” became one of the band’s signature songs. Its synchronized handclaps became a centerpiece of Queen concerts and produced one of the most memorable moments of the group’s 1985 Live Aid performance. Taylor followed with “A Kind of Magic,” another major international hit and the title track of Queen’s 1986 album. He was also the principal writer behind “The Invisible Man” and “These Are the Days of Our Lives.” Beginning with “The Miracle,” Queen adopted a policy of crediting songs collectively to all four members, even when a particular song had originated primarily with one musician. Queen ultimately sold hundreds of millions of records worldwide and became one of the most successful touring and recording acts in rock history.

    Live Aid

Queen’s performance at Live Aid on July 13, 1985, became one of the defining moments of the band’s career. With roughly 20 minutes onstage at Wembley Stadium, the group performed portions of “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Radio Ga Ga,” “Hammer to Fall,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions.” Mercury’s ability to command the enormous crowd became legendary, but the set also showcased how tightly the four members functioned as a live band. During “Radio Ga Ga,” tens of thousands of people performed the synchronized handclaps associated with Taylor’s song, creating one of the performance’s most famous images. Live Aid has since been cited repeatedly as one of the greatest performances in rock history and became a major sequence in the 2018 Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

    Freddie Mercury’s Death

Queen continued recording as Mercury’s health deteriorated during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Taylor’s “These Are the Days of Our Lives” took on additional poignancy when its music video became one of Mercury’s final filmed appearances. Mercury died from complications of AIDS on November 24, 1991, at the age of 45. Taylor and May helped organize the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert at Wembley Stadium the following year, with performers including David Bowie, Elton John, George Michael, Annie Lennox and members of Guns N’ Roses. Taylor, May and Deacon later completed “Made in Heaven” using recordings Mercury had made before his death. The album was released in 1995 and became another major international success. Deacon gradually withdrew from performing afterward, leaving Taylor and May as Queen’s two active members.

    Solo Career

Taylor began releasing solo material while Queen was still at its commercial peak. His first solo single, “I Wanna Testify,” arrived in 1977, followed by his debut solo album, “Fun in Space,” in 1981. Taylor handled the vocals and played most of the instruments himself. He followed with “Strange Frontier” in 1984 and later released albums including “Happiness?,” “Electric Fire,” “Fun on Earth” and “Outsider.” His solo work allowed him to explore a harder-edged and occasionally more politically outspoken style than would necessarily have fit within Queen. Taylor is a multi-instrumentalist who plays guitar, bass and keyboards in addition to drums. Over the course of his career, he has worked with performers including Eric Clapton, Roger Waters, Robert Plant and Phil Collins, and has worked as a producer for other artists.

    The Cross

In 1987, Taylor formed The Cross, giving himself an outlet separate from both Queen and his solo recordings. Rather than serving primarily as drummer, he became the group’s lead singer and rhythm guitarist. The Cross released three studio albums: “Shove It,” “Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know” and “Blue Rock.” The band never approached Queen’s commercial scale but developed a following in parts of continental Europe and toured regularly during its relatively brief existence. The project ended in the early 1990s as Taylor’s attention increasingly returned to Queen-related work and his solo career.

    Queen + Adam Lambert

Queen’s live career entered another major phase when Taylor and May began performing with Adam Lambert. The musicians first appeared together following Lambert’s run on “American Idol,” and what began as a handful of performances eventually developed into Queen + Adam Lambert. Lambert was never presented as a replacement for Mercury. Instead, the concerts combined his own theatrical style with Queen’s catalog while continuing to feature tributes, recordings and imagery of Mercury. Queen + Adam Lambert became a major international touring operation, performing in arenas and stadiums across North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and other markets. The group also completed a Las Vegas residency. The touring business became an important continuing source of income for Taylor and May, and those future live-performance rights remained with them when Queen’s broader catalog was sold.

The £1 Billion Queen Catalog Deal

For decades, Roger Taylor, Brian May, John Deacon and Freddie Mercury’s estate held equal interests in the core Queen companies. These entities controlled valuable recording, publishing, royalty, name-and-likeness and other intellectual-property interests associated with the band. The business generated substantial cash flow even before the catalog sale. For the fiscal year ending in 2023, Queen Productions generated nearly £40 million in revenue and distributed £19.65 million in dividends among its four equal ownership interests — just under £5 million per ownership share before taxes for that year alone. In 2024, Sony reached an agreement to acquire a broad portfolio of Queen’s music and related rights in a transaction valued at roughly £1 billion. Corporate filings connected to the acquisition later showed more than £1.07 billion committed to Queen music rights and related companies. The transaction encompassed publishing, recording interests, name and likeness rights and other Queen assets. Future live-performance income for Taylor and May was excluded, leaving both musicians free to continue earning from Queen concerts. The deal placed Queen’s catalog among the most valuable bodies of music ever sold.

    “Bohemian Rhapsody” Movie

Queen experienced another enormous resurgence following the release of the 2018 movie “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Taylor and May were closely involved with the project, which starred Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury and recreated major moments from Queen’s history, including Live Aid. The movie became a worldwide box-office hit, and Malek won the Academy Award for Best Actor. Its success introduced Queen’s music to another generation and produced a substantial increase in streaming, album sales, licensing, merchandise and interest in the band’s live history.

    Personal Life

Taylor has five children. He had two children, Felix and Rory, with Dominique Beyrand and later had three children, Rufus, Tigerlily and Lola, with model Debbie Leng. Rufus Taylor followed his father into music and became a professional drummer, including as a member of The Darkness. Roger married Sarina Potgieter in 2010. He has long been known for his interest in cars and accumulated an extensive collection during Queen’s most successful years. Taylor was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, or OBE, in the 2020 New Year Honours for services to music.

    Real Estate

One of Taylor’s best-known former properties is Milhangar House, a large country estate in Thursley, Surrey. Taylor purchased the property in 1979 and lived there for more than two decades. The roughly 70-acre estate includes a large main residence, swimming pool, tennis court, stables, extensive grounds and a centuries-old watermill converted into a recording studio. Taylor worked on music at the estate throughout Queen’s commercial peak before selling the property in 2003. It later returned to the market with an asking price of more than $6 million. In January 1981, Roger paid $352,000 for a home in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles. Situated above the Sunset Strip behind a gated driveway and mature landscaping, the roughly 4,300-square-foot home remained in his ownership for more than four decades. It was listed for sale in 2024 for $6.2 million. From a dentistry student who answered a newspaper ad to a $425 million fortune built on drums, songs and one of music’s greatest catalogs, Roger Taylor’s career is the rare case where the drummer wrote some of the biggest hits too.
