The American sports commentator and sportswriter established himself as one of sports journalism’s most respected and recognizable voices over a career spanning more than four decades — beginning at “The Washington Post” in 1980, becoming one of the newspaper’s most prominent sports columnists, and then, in 2001, launching “Pardon the Interruption” (PTI) on ESPN with colleague Tony Kornheiser, a fast-paced, debate-driven show that helped make both men among ESPN’s highest-paid personalities.

    Occupation Sports commentator, sportswriter
Known for “Pardon the Interruption,” “The Washington Post,” NBA coverage
Net worth $18 million (Celebrity Net Worth estimate)

    Early Life

Michael Ray Wilbon was born on November 19, 1958, in Chicago, Illinois. Raised on the city’s South Side by working-class parents, he attended St. Ignatius College Preparatory School, graduating in 1976. He subsequently enrolled at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, where he wrote for the student newspaper, “The Daily Northwestern.”

Wilbon graduated in 1980 with a degree in journalism. During his college years, he completed summer internships at “The Washington Post,” establishing relationships that would lead directly to his first full-time reporting job. He maintained close ties with Northwestern throughout his career, eventually becoming a member of the university’s Board of Trustees and the Medill Board of Advisors.

    The Washington Post

Wilbon began his professional journalism career in 1980 at “The Washington Post.” He initially worked as a general assignment sports reporter, covering college basketball, Major League Baseball, the NFL and the NBA. His work gradually expanded to include some of the biggest events in American sports, and in 1990 he was promoted to full-time sports columnist.

Over the following two decades, Wilbon became one of the newspaper’s most influential voices. His columns frequently explored the cultural and social significance of sports rather than simply analyzing games and results. He covered ten Olympic Games, numerous Final Fours and NBA Finals, and nearly every Super Bowl beginning in 1987.

Wilbon developed close relationships with many prominent athletes, particularly in professional basketball. His connections included Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley, with whom he collaborated on the bestselling books “I May Be Wrong, But I Doubt It” and “Who’s Afraid of a Large Black Man?” In December 2010, after more than 30 years with “The Washington Post,” Wilbon wrote his final column and left the newspaper to concentrate on his expanding responsibilities at ESPN.

    Pardon the Interruption

On October 22, 2001, Michael Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser debuted “Pardon the Interruption” on ESPN. The show grew out of the animated arguments and conversations the two journalists had developed during their years working together at “The Washington Post.” Unlike conventional sports discussion programs, PTI featured rapid-fire debates about the day’s biggest stories, with a visible countdown clock and a succession of short segments. Wilbon and Kornheiser frequently disagreed, interrupted each other and engaged in good-natured arguments, creating an entertaining format that would be imitated across sports television.

The show became one of ESPN’s most successful studio programs and earned multiple Sports Emmy Awards. Its recurring segments, including “Five Good Minutes,” “Mail Time” and “Errors and Omissions,” became familiar to millions of viewers. Wilbon and Kornheiser also regularly appeared during the opening minutes of ESPN’s evening “SportsCenter” broadcast.

In October 2026, ESPN celebrated the show’s 25th anniversary with a special hour of programming featuring both hosts. By that point, PTI had become the network’s most-watched daily studio show, having aired more than 5,500 episodes, and ESPN reported it was averaging 718,000 viewers during the first nine months of the year, its strongest performance for that period since 2018.

In addition to PTI, Wilbon became a prominent voice in ESPN and ABC’s NBA coverage. He joined the network’s basketball programming in 2005 and regularly contributed to “NBA Countdown,” providing analysis before major games, including playoff matchups and NBA Finals broadcasts. Wilbon also appeared on ESPN’s “The Sports Reporters” and spent more than a decade contributing to Washington television programs.

    Salary and ESPN Contracts

In 2015, it was reported that Wilbon earned $4 million per year through his contract with ESPN. In 2019, it was reported that this figure had increased to $6 million per year, putting him on par with his “Pardon the Interruption” co-host Tony Kornheiser. Those salaries made Wilbon one of ESPN’s highest-paid on-air personalities, covering his work on “Pardon the Interruption” as well as his contributions to the network’s NBA coverage and other programming.

In September 2025, Wilbon and Kornheiser signed new multiyear contract extensions with ESPN, ensuring both hosts would remain with the network beyond PTI’s 25th anniversary. ESPN did not disclose the financial terms of the new agreements, so the previously reported $6 million annual salary remains the most widely cited figure for Wilbon’s compensation.

    Awards

Wilbon has received numerous honors recognizing his contributions to journalism. In 2001, the Society of Professional Journalists named him the country’s top sports columnist. In 2007, he and Kornheiser received “The Washington Post’s” Eugene Meyer Award. In 2009, the National Association of Black Journalists honored Wilbon with its Lifetime Achievement Award. He was inducted into the D.C. Sports Hall of Fame in 2011 and the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. In 2017, Wilbon and Kornheiser jointly received the National Press Club’s Fourth Estate Award. In 2020, Wilbon received the Curt Gowdy Media Award for print journalism from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and was inducted into the National Sports Media Association Hall of Fame.

In 2023, Wilbon collaborated with NBA star Chris Paul on the book “Sixty-One: Life Lessons from Papa, On and Off the Court,” which became a “New York Times” bestseller.

Health Issues and 2026 ESPN Leave of Absence

Wilbon has experienced significant health problems during his broadcasting career. On January 28, 2008, he suffered a heart attack while staying at his home in Scottsdale, Arizona. After experiencing chest pains, his wife drove him to a local hospital, where doctors discovered a blockage in his heart, and he underwent a successful angioplasty to clear the blockage. Around the same time, Wilbon was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. He subsequently returned to his broadcasting and journalism responsibilities.

On November 2, 2026, Wilbon announced that he was taking an indefinite leave of absence from “Pardon the Interruption” and his NBA broadcasting duties at ESPN and ABC. In a statement posted to social media, Wilbon explained that he had been struggling with multiple health problems in recent months and needed to step away to concentrate on his well-being. He described the move by saying it wasn’t retirement, but a trip to the injured list, hopefully not an extended one. He acknowledged that doctors and people close to him, including Tony Kornheiser, had noticed troubling signs in recent years and encouraged him to reduce his workload, and admitted he should have listened sooner. He also emphasized that the difficulties were medical in nature and were not related to alcohol consumption or gambling, and did not disclose the specific medical conditions responsible for his 2026 leave.

ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro issued a statement expressing the network’s full support for Wilbon and his family, saying ESPN would welcome him back whenever he was ready, while numerous colleagues and fellow broadcasters publicly offered encouragement. Wilbon expressed gratitude and said he remained hopeful about eventually returning to work alongside Kornheiser, while acknowledging he could not predict how long his absence would last.

    Personal Life and Real Estate

Wilbon is married to Sheryl Wilbon, an attorney who earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and her law degree from Duke University. The couple welcomed their son, Matthew Raymond Wilbon, on March 26, 2008, through a surrogate. Wilbon has frequently spoken about his devotion to family and his hometown of Chicago. Despite living in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area for much of his adult life, he remains an enthusiastic supporter of Chicago sports teams, particularly the Cubs and Bulls.

Wilbon and his wife have owned residences in Bethesda, Maryland, and Scottsdale, Arizona. In 1999, the couple purchased a residential lot from developer D.R. Horton in Bethesda and built a large family home, later undertaking extensive renovations. In 2005, Wilbon paid $837,000 for a home in Scottsdale, Arizona, near the Whisper Rock Golf Club, a residence measuring 4,082 square feet that has served as a second home.
