Bryan Cranston net worth is $50 million in 2026. The figure is the payoff of one of the longest slow burns in Hollywood: decades as a jobbing character actor, then a sitcom breakthrough as the goofy father Hal on “Malcolm in the Middle,” then one of the most acclaimed transformations in television history as Walter White on “Breaking Bad.” At the height of “Breaking Bad,” Cranston earned $225,000 per episode, won four Emmy Awards for the role, and went on to an Academy Award nomination, two Tony Awards and a career that now spans prestige television, film, Broadway and producing.

    Early Life

Bryan Lee Cranston was born on March 7, 1956, in Canoga Park, California. His mother, Peggy Sell, was a radio actress, while his father, Joseph Louis Cranston, worked as an actor and boxer and held a variety of other jobs while struggling to support the family. His father eventually left the family when Bryan was 11. Bryan and his older brother, Kyle, had little contact with him for more than a decade before tracking him down when Bryan was in his early 20s. Cranston later said that some of Walter White’s physical mannerisms were inspired by his father.

One of the stranger stories from Cranston’s childhood involves Charles Manson. When Bryan was around 12, he and a cousin visited Spahn Ranch while horseback riding and briefly encountered Manson before the Tate-LaBianca murders made his name infamous. Cranston initially had no plans to follow his parents into acting. He attended Los Angeles Valley College and graduated in 1976 with an associate degree in police science, at one point considering a career in law enforcement.

    Early Acting Career

After college, Cranston and his brother took an extended motorcycle trip across the United States. By the time he returned to California, he had decided to pursue acting. The early years were not glamorous. Cranston supported himself through jobs that included waiting tables, loading trucks, working as a security guard, performing wedding ceremonies as an ordained minister, and operating cameras for a video-dating service.

His first significant television role came on the ABC soap opera “Loving,” where he played Douglas Donovan from 1983 to 1985. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Cranston accumulated a long list of guest roles, commercials, voice-over jobs and minor film appearances. He became particularly recognizable to television audiences through his recurring role as dentist Tim Whatley on “Seinfeld,” and also appeared on shows including “Murder, She Wrote,” “Baywatch,” “Matlock” and “The Flash.” In 1998, Cranston starred in the “X-Files” episode “Drive,” written by Vince Gilligan — a performance that would prove enormously important a decade later. His film work during this period included playing astronaut Gus Grissom in “That Thing You Do!” and appearing in Steven Spielberg’s “Saving Private Ryan.”

    “Malcolm in the Middle”

Cranston’s first major breakthrough arrived in 2000 when he was cast as Hal, the eccentric father on Fox’s “Malcolm in the Middle.” The series starred Frankie Muniz as the highly intelligent Malcolm and Jane Kaczmarek as his formidable mother, Lois. Cranston’s Hal was impulsive, emotional, immature, affectionate and frequently more childlike than his children. The role demonstrated Cranston’s gift for physical comedy and his willingness to commit completely to absurd situations, from roller-skating in a glittering costume to becoming obsessed with speed walking and battling a bee.

Cranston received three Emmy nominations for his performance and also directed several episodes of the series. “Malcolm in the Middle” ended in 2006 after seven seasons. Twenty years later, Cranston reunited with Muniz, Kaczmarek and other members of the cast for the 2026 revival “Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair,” which centers in part on Hal and Lois’ 40th wedding anniversary.

    “Breaking Bad”

In 2008, Vince Gilligan cast Cranston as Walter White, a high-school chemistry teacher who begins manufacturing methamphetamine after receiving a cancer diagnosis. AMC initially had reservations about casting an actor best known for playing a goofy sitcom father. Gilligan pointed executives toward Cranston’s darker performance in “The X-Files,” and the decision ultimately produced one of television’s most celebrated characters.

Over five seasons, Walter evolves from an apparently mild-mannered teacher desperate to provide for his family into the ruthless drug kingpin known as Heisenberg. Cranston starred opposite Aaron Paul, who played Jesse Pinkman. At the height of the show, Cranston earned $225,000 per episode — $3 million for the 13-episode fourth season and $3.6 million for the 16 episodes that made up the fifth and final season.

Cranston won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for the show’s first three seasons and won a fourth for its final season. He also shared in “Breaking Bad’s” 2014 Emmy victory for Outstanding Drama Series as one of the show’s producers. The series ended in 2013 after 62 episodes. Cranston later returned as Walter White in the 2019 film “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie” and appeared with Paul in two 2022 episodes of the prequel series “Better Call Saul.”

    Film Career

The success of “Breaking Bad” dramatically expanded Cranston’s film opportunities. During and immediately after the series, he appeared in “Drive,” “Contagion,” “John Carter,” “Rock of Ages” and Ben Affleck’s Academy Award-winning “Argo.” In 2014, Cranston appeared in the blockbuster “Godzilla.” The following year, he portrayed Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo in “Trumbo,” a performance that earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

His subsequent movies included “The Infiltrator,” “Why Him?,” “Last Flag Flying,” “The Upside,” “The One and Only Ivan,” “Jerry & Marge Go Large” and Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City.” In 2024, he appeared in the spy comedy “Argylle” and returned as the voice of Li in “Kung Fu Panda 4.” His 2025 films included “Everything’s Going to Be Great,” opposite Allison Janney, and Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme.”

    Broadway and Theater

Cranston has achieved a level of theatrical success nearly equal to his television career. In 2014, he made his Broadway debut portraying President Lyndon B. Johnson in “All the Way.” Cranston won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play and later reprised the role in an HBO television adaptation.

He returned to Broadway in “Network,” playing news anchor Howard Beale in a stage adaptation of the 1976 film. After first performing the role in London’s West End, Cranston brought the production to Broadway and won his second Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play in 2019. Cranston returned to the West End in 2025 as Joe Keller in Ivo van Hove’s production of Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons.” The production ran at Wyndham’s Theatre through March 2026 and earned Cranston an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor, while “All My Sons” won the Olivier for Best Revival.

    “Your Honor” and “The Studio”

From 2020 to 2023, Cranston starred as New Orleans judge Michael Desiato in the Showtime drama “Your Honor.” His character becomes involved in an increasingly dangerous series of crimes and cover-ups after his son kills the child of an organized-crime boss in a hit-and-run accident. The series gave Cranston another major dramatic television role and earned him a Golden Globe nomination.

In 2025, Cranston appeared in the Apple TV+ comedy “The Studio,” starring Seth Rogen. Cranston played Griffin Mill, the eccentric CEO of the fictional Continental Studios. His guest performance earned him the 2025 Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. The victory brought Cranston’s career Emmy total to seven.

    Directing and Producing

Cranston has worked behind the camera throughout much of his career. He directed episodes of “Malcolm in the Middle,” “Breaking Bad,” “Modern Family,” “The Office” and other television series. As a producer, his credits have included “Breaking Bad,” “Sneaky Pete,” “Your Honor” and the television adaptation of “All the Way.” His producing work on “Breaking Bad” earned him an Emmy as part of the team behind the 2014 Outstanding Drama Series winner.

    Personal Life

Cranston married writer Mickey Middleton in 1977. The marriage ended in divorce in 1982. In 1984, Bryan met actress Robin Dearden while filming an episode of “Airwolf.” Cranston played the episode’s villain, while Dearden played one of his hostages. They married in 1989. The couple has one daughter, actress Taylor Dearden, who was born in 1993.

In 2016, Cranston published his memoir, “A Life in Parts,” covering his childhood, early struggles as an actor, family relationships and the roles that shaped his career. He has said he wishes Americans thought more like Europeans when it comes to money and work: “They take time off, they do what they love. We think work is the most valued commodity. Really the most valued commodity is time.”

    Real Estate

In 2007, Bryan and Robin paid $2.5 million for a beachfront property in Ventura County, California. They demolished the existing house and constructed a highly energy-efficient residence that was completed in 2012. The home earned LEED Platinum certification and was designed as a net-zero property, meaning it could produce as much energy as it consumed, with solar panels, rainwater collection systems and extensive insulation.

Cranston listed the home in February 2021 for $4.995 million and sold it shortly afterward for $5.45 million. In 2017, Bryan paid $3.1 million for a two-bedroom apartment overlooking Central Park in Manhattan. He later listed the apartment and sold it in 2024 for $3.5 million. In 2021, Cranston and Dearden paid $5.6 million for a two-bedroom co-op at Harperley Hall on Central Park West, featuring Central Park views, balconies and a wood-burning fireplace.
