As of September 2026, Zhang Yiming net worth has passed $105 billion, making the ByteDance founder the richest person in Asia. He has overtaken Indian billionaire Gautam Adani for the first time, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Zhang’s fortune has grown more than eightfold since 2019, when Bloomberg first valued it at just $13 billion.

Seven years ago, Zhang Yiming was worth $13 billion. That already sounded like a fortune. But it looks small next to where he stands today.

Zhang’s net worth has just crossed $105 billion. That’s a jump of roughly $92 billion since 2019. With that surge, the 43-year-old TikTok founder has officially passed Gautam Adani to become Asia’s richest person for the first time ever.

And here’s the twist: Zhang stepped down as ByteDance’s CEO five years ago. He hasn’t run daily operations in a long time. So how did his fortune explode from $13 billion to $105 billion? TikTok is the easy answer. But the real story is bigger. TikTok is now just one piece of a much larger money machine.

From $13 Billion To $105 Billion: Zhang Yiming’s Wealth Timeline

Bloomberg started tracking Zhang’s fortune in March 2019. Back then, it was estimated at $13 billion. ByteDance was already one of the hottest private tech companies on the planet. TikTok was growing fast worldwide, and its Chinese sister app, Douyin, already had a massive audience at home.

But ByteDance was still worth a fraction of what investors believe today. Over the next seven years, Zhang’s fortune grew roughly eightfold.

The most recent jump happened fast. Bloomberg says Zhang’s net worth rose by more than $12 billion in September 2026 alone. That jump came after major investment firms, including BlackRock, Fidelity Investments, and T. Rowe Price, updated their valuations of ByteDance.

That update was enough to push Zhang past Adani. Adani’s fortune had climbed as high as roughly $120 billion in June 2026. It then slid in the months that followed as shares across his business empire dropped.

How Do You Value A Fortune Tied To A Private Company?

Zhang’s wealth isn’t easy to track like Elon Musk’s Tesla shares or Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta stock. ByteDance isn’t publicly traded. There’s no stock ticker flashing its price every second. That makes calculating Zhang’s fortune much trickier.

Zhang reportedly owns close to 20% of ByteDance. So the real question becomes simple: what is ByteDance actually worth?

In February 2026, a proposed share sale by General Atlantic valued ByteDance at around $550 billion. That was a massive jump from a 2025 employee stock buyback, which valued the company at more than $330 billion. Some recent private-market estimates have gone even higher.

If ByteDance is worth $600 billion and Zhang owns 20%, his stake would theoretically be worth $120 billion.

Bloomberg applies a 10% risk discount to ByteDance because it’s a closely held private company. Its shares can’t be sold on a public stock exchange. Apply that discount to a $120 billion stake, and you land at $108 billion — remarkably close to Bloomberg’s current estimate of just over $105 billion.

Different analysts land on slightly different numbers. But the trend is clear: private investors believe ByteDance has become dramatically more valuable.

The $500+ Billion Company Most People Still Think Is Just TikTok

Zhang co-founded ByteDance with his friend Liang Rubo back in 2012. The company’s first big hit wasn’t TikTok. It was Toutiao, a Chinese news app built on an idea that feels obvious now but was ahead of its time back then.

Instead of asking users what they wanted to see, ByteDance’s software watched what they actually did. What did people click? What did they scroll past? How long did they linger on something? The algorithm learned from those habits and kept adjusting what it served next.

That single idea became the foundation of the entire ByteDance empire.

The company launched Douyin in China in 2016, followed by the international version, TikTok, a year later. ByteDance then spent roughly $1 billion acquiring Musical.ly, a lip-syncing app with a huge teenage fan base across the U.S. and other Western markets.

In 2018, Musical.ly merged into TikTok. What happened next is well known: TikTok became one of the most downloaded, culturally influential apps ever made. It reshaped the music industry, launched a new generation of influencers, became an advertising giant, and pushed rivals like Instagram and YouTube to copy its short-video format.

But ByteDance never stopped being an algorithm and AI company at heart. And that fact matters more than ever to Zhang’s fortune today.

This Is Becoming An AI Fortune, Not Just A TikTok Fortune

It’s fair to call Zhang Yiming the “TikTok billionaire.” But increasingly, his $105 billion fortune is also an artificial intelligence fortune.

Long before ChatGPT made AI the biggest tech story of the decade, ByteDance was already using machine learning at massive scale to predict exactly what hundreds of millions of users wanted to watch next. Recommendation technology has always been at the company’s core.

Now ByteDance is pouring resources into generative AI. Its Doubao chatbot has become one of China’s most popular AI products, while its Seedance technology competes in the fast-growing AI video-generation space.

That helps explain why ByteDance’s valuation keeps climbing, even as TikTok matures. Investors typically start asking where the next wave of growth will come from once a product hits that stage. Increasingly, they see AI as the answer.

For Zhang, who still owns roughly one-fifth of ByteDance, every bump in the company’s private valuation lands a huge blow — in his favor — on his personal net worth.

The TikTok Ban Crisis That Almost Changed Everything

Just a few years ago, TikTok’s future in the United States looked shaky at best.

In 2024, Congress passed a law requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok’s U.S. operations or risk the app being pulled from the American market. The Supreme Court let the law stand in January 2025, and TikTok briefly went dark for U.S. users.

For ByteDance’s investors, that was a real scare. One of the company’s most valuable global products was staring down the possibility of a total U.S. exit.

The worst-case scenario never fully happened.

In January 2026, ByteDance completed a restructuring that created TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, built with American partners including Oracle and Silver Lake. American and international investors ended up with an 80.1% stake in the new venture, while ByteDance kept 19.9%. The new setup put U.S. user data, cybersecurity, and the American recommendation system under the joint venture’s control.

TikTok kept running in the United States. One of the biggest clouds over ByteDance’s valuation lifted.

    ByteDance Isn’t A Money-Losing Startup — It’s A Cash Machine

There’s another reason investors are comfortable with ByteDance’s massive valuation. This isn’t a speculative AI startup burning cash while it searches for a business model.

ByteDance already brings in enormous revenue and profit. Its businesses stretch across advertising, social media, e-commerce, gaming, enterprise software, and AI, with TikTok and Douyin anchoring two of the biggest consumer platforms on Earth.

That makes Zhang’s wealth fundamentally different from fortunes built on companies still years away from turning a profit. ByteDance has already proven it can generate serious cash while continuing to invest heavily in new products.

And remember the simple math behind it all: Zhang owns roughly a fifth of the company. If investors decide ByteDance is worth another $50 billion, the value of his stake climbs by roughly $10 billion — almost overnight.

That’s how fortunes at this scale can move so fast.

He Hasn’t Been CEO Since 2021 — And He Still Got Richer

Here’s the strangest part of the story: Zhang added tens of billions of dollars to his fortune after he mostly stepped away from running the company day to day.

Zhang stepped down as ByteDance’s CEO in 2021. Later that year, he also gave up his chairman title and handed daily management to co-founder Liang Rubo. He was still in his late 30s at the time.

He told employees he wasn’t especially interested in traditional management. He preferred thinking about long-term strategy, company culture, and technology.

It worked out. Zhang stopped being CEO. He kept his ownership stake. ByteDance kept growing. And his shares became dramatically more valuable.

A New Kind Of Asian Fortune

Zhang overtaking Adani matters for another reason beyond the numbers. For decades, many of Asia’s biggest fortunes were built in traditional, physical industries: energy, ports, real estate, telecoms, manufacturing, commodities, and retail.

Adani built a sprawling infrastructure empire spanning ports, power plants, airports, mining, renewable energy, cement, and logistics. Zhang built his fortune from software that predicts which video you’ll watch next.

That puts Zhang closer to the founders who reshaped America’s billionaire rankings. Jeff Bezos built his fortune through Amazon. Zuckerberg built his through Facebook. Musk built his through EVs, rockets, satellites, and AI.

Zhang’s rise is a preview of where the next generation of massive fortunes may come from. The great fortunes of the industrial era were built on oil, railroads, steel, and real estate. Increasingly, today’s fortunes are built on software, algorithms, computing power, and AI.

    The Bottom Line

In March 2019, Zhang Yiming was worth an estimated $13 billion. Today, his fortune stands above $105 billion — a gain of roughly $92 billion in just seven years.

Along the way, he lived through a Chinese tech crackdown, watched the U.S. come dangerously close to banning his company’s flagship product, stepped down as CEO, and largely disappeared from public view. Through all of it, ByteDance kept growing.

The company has moved far beyond its old reputation as “just the TikTok owner.” It’s investing heavily in AI, running some of the biggest consumer platforms on the planet, and pulling in private-market valuations north of half a trillion dollars.

If ByteDance’s AI bets keep paying off, $105 billion may eventually look like just another stop along the way for Zhang Yiming.

For now, though, it’s enough to hand him a title he’s never held before: Zhang Yiming is the richest person in Asia.
