Tim Tebow’s Life Surge Paydays: How a $20 Ticket Can Turn Into a $40,000 Bill

A ticket to hear Tim Tebow speak can cost as little as $20. For that small price, fans get a full day of worship music, big-name speakers, and talk about faith, purpose, and building wealth. It sounds harmless. But for some attendees, that $20 ticket became the first step toward tens of thousands of dollars in debt.

Tebow has become one of the most recognizable faces at Life Surge, a company that runs Christian-themed financial education events across the country. A joint investigation by Mother Jones and the podcast “Pablo Torre Finds Out” is now raising hard questions about what Tebow’s name is worth to the business — and what some customers gave up chasing the promise of financial freedom.

What Actually Happens at a Life Surge Event

The Life Surge sales model works in stages, and each stage costs more than the last.

    • Stage one: A full-day event ticket for around $20, featuring worship, motivational talks, and celebrity guests.
    • Stage two: A three-day “Impact Class” for $97, covering basics like stock trading or real estate investing.
    • Stage three: Advanced coaching and mentorship packages priced anywhere from $10,000 to $40,000.

Life Surge says fewer than 3% of ticket buyers ever reach stage three. But for the people who do, the price tag can be life-changing — and not always in a good way.

Tebow isn’t the only recognizable name Life Surge has booked. The company has also featured Magic Johnson, Joe Montana, Jeff Foxworthy, and Sage Steele. Still, according to the investigation, Tebow has become one of its most frequent headliners.

How Much Has Tim Tebow Earned From Life Surge?

The numbers are striking. Mother Jones found that Tebow appeared at:

    • 10 Life Surge events in 2024
    • 10 more in 2025
    • Up to 20 scheduled for 2026

That adds up to as many as 40 appearances over three years. Based on standard celebrity speaking fees — often estimated between $75,000 and $100,000 per event — Mother Jones calculated that Tebow’s total compensation could fall somewhere between $2 million and $4 million.

It’s important to note this figure isn’t confirmed. Life Surge hasn’t released Tebow’s contract, and the company says his pay was never tied to how many courses attendees bought.

For context, Celebrity Net Worth currently places Tebow’s overall fortune at around $10 million. If the high end of that Life Surge estimate is accurate, these appearances could account for a major share of his total wealth.

A $20,000 Course and $40,000 in Borrowed Money

Not every story from Life Surge events has a happy ending.

Cathy Luebke and her husband attended a Life Surge event in Carmel, Indiana, in 2024. As devout Christians, they said the religious setting and familiar celebrity faces made the sales pitches feel more trustworthy than they might have otherwise.

The couple bought a $20,000 investment-course package. To fund it, they borrowed roughly $40,000 using promotional, interest-free credit cards — money they hoped to pay back with profits from trading.

That plan didn’t work out. The Luebkes told Mother Jones they made no money in the stock market. When the promotional interest period ended, their credit card rate jumped to nearly 29%. They eventually took out a home equity loan just to cover the remaining $20,000 balance.

Life Surge disputes any suggestion that its programs are designed to trap customers in debt. The company maintains that financing is optional, handled by independent third parties, and always the customer’s own decision.

    “Tim Tebow Made Me Trust”

One of the most emotional details in the investigation came from a disabled customer living on a limited income, who filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). In it, the customer said Tebow’s involvement was part of why they initially believed the program was legitimate.

This is a personal complaint, not an official FTC finding, and there’s no evidence Tebow was aware of this individual’s situation. But it highlights something important: Tebow’s value to Life Surge was never just about football. It’s about nearly two decades of building a reputation around faith, charity, and integrity — the kind of trust that’s hard to manufacture and easy to lean on in a sales setting.

Was Tebow Just a Motivational Speaker?

Life Surge maintains that its celebrity guests are booked purely as motivational speakers, not salespeople. The company says it doesn’t ask headliners to promote or endorse its paid courses.

There’s no evidence in the investigation that Tebow helped set prices, design course content, arrange financing, or train sales staff. But one detail complicates that clean separation.

Mother Jones obtained audio from a 2023 event in which Tebow spoke directly to attendees who had already enrolled in paid classes, encouraging them to stick with the program and “finish strong.” That single moment suggests his role, at least occasionally, went beyond a general inspirational speech aimed at the whole crowd.

Neither Tebow nor the other celebrity speakers named in the investigation responded to requests for comment.

    A “$15,000 Mistake”

Karen Neal, a 61-year-old former customer, shared a similar story. She said she was encouraged to tap into her home equity to pay for a $13,000 real estate program. She and her husband never turned a profit, partly because they didn’t have enough capital left to actually buy property.

Life Surge later offered her a partial refund of about $5,000. Neal still calls the whole experience a “$15,000 mistake.” She admits she should have researched the program more before signing up, but her bigger complaint was about atmosphere: it was hard to simply pause, think it over, and decide calmly whether spending five figures made sense for her family.

    Life Surge’s Response

Life Surge firmly rejects the idea that its business model relies on pressuring people into unaffordable debt. The company points to several facts in its defense:

    • Fewer than 3% of ticket holders ever purchase advanced training.
    • Financing is optional and provided by independent lenders.
    • Customers receive clear disclosures that profits are never guaranteed.
    • More than 3,000 Google reviews average 4.8 stars, with a claimed 97% five-star rate.

The company also argues its pricing looks different when spread out. A $27,000 multi-year program, for instance, works out to roughly $9,000 per year.

Life Surge describes its teachings as Christian stewardship, not prosperity gospel, and says refund policies are available for those unhappy with entry-level events or classes. Still, the investigation includes accounts from former customers and employees describing experiences that didn’t always match those official policies.

The Real Question Isn’t About the Money

There’s no proof that Tim Tebow personally designed Life Surge’s courses, set their prices, or told anyone to borrow money. That’s not really the point of this story.

The real issue is trust — and what it’s worth. For years, Tebow has built one of the most respected reputations in American sports, centered on faith and service. Life Surge put that reputation on a stage, in front of people who paid $20 to walk through the door.

Some of those attendees never spent another dollar. Others spent tens of thousands and walked away with less money than they started with. Meanwhile, if Mother Jones’ estimate holds up, Tebow may have earned between $2 million and $4 million from his appearances alone.

The uncomfortable question isn’t whether Tebow personally sold anyone a course. It’s what responsibility comes with lending a trusted name to a business built on that very trust.
