Tony Romo and CBS Part Ways: How Much of His $72 Million Contract Will He Still Collect?

Tony Romo’s run at CBS is over. And the way it ended may turn out to be one of the most expensive goodbyes in sports TV history.

On Friday, October 2, CBS Sports said it and Romo had “mutually agreed to part ways.” That closed out nine years in the network’s top NFL booth. Once, it looked like Romo would sit there for decades.

J.J. Watt stepped in when Romo went on leave. He will stay in the lead booth with Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson.

So the seat is settled. The money is not.

    The $72 Million Question

Back in 2020, Romo signed a 10-year, $180 million contract with CBS. That works out to about $18 million a year, with the deal running through 2030.

When CBS pulled him off the air, he had roughly four years and $72 million left on it.

CBS did not just cancel the deal and walk away. According to The Athletic, the two sides worked out a financial settlement before the split was announced. The reporting says Romo will likely get a “good portion” of what remained.

The exact number has not been shared. It may never be.

Here is how the math could look. These are only examples, not reported figures:

    • 50% of the remaining deal: about $36 million
    • 75% of the remaining deal: about $54 million
    • Close to 100%: about $72 million

Even the lowest of those is a huge amount of money. And Romo no longer has to study film, travel every weekend, or call three-hour games to earn it.

Why Would CBS Pay Him Anything?

This is the question many fans are asking. Romo was arrested, CBS put him on leave, and he later pleaded no contest. So why not just fire him and stop the checks?

The short answer: big TV contracts are not simple.

Romo’s full contract has never been made public. But deals this large usually include a morals clause. That is a rule that lets a network act if a star’s behavior hurts the brand.

Still, the details matter a lot:

    • Does the clause allow full termination, or only a suspension?
    • Did the arrest meet the contract’s definition of “cause”?
    • Did CBS follow every step the contract requires?
    • Is part of the money guaranteed no matter what?

If CBS had cut him off and Romo had fought back, the case could have dragged through arbitration or court for a long time. It would have cost millions in legal fees. And nobody could be sure who would win.

A settlement avoids all of that. CBS gets a clean break and a firm answer. Romo gives up his claim to the full amount but still walks away with a very large sum.

Reports also say some people inside the network had grown unhappy with how expensive the deal was. That may have made a quiet, negotiated exit even more appealing.

From $3 Million to $180 Million

Romo’s payday looks even bigger when you remember how fast his TV career took off.

He retired from the Dallas Cowboys after the 2016 season. CBS then made a bold move. It put a first-time broadcaster next to Nantz on its top team.

It worked. Romo became a star almost overnight. He spoke like a quarterback who had just left the field. He called out defenses before the snap and often guessed the next play. Fans and critics compared him to the late John Madden for his energy and his gift for making football easy to follow.

His first CBS contract paid him a little over $3 million a year. Then, in 2020, ESPN got ready to chase him. Reports said the network was prepared to offer more than $10 million a year.

CBS answered with a deal that shook the industry: $180 million over 10 years. At the time, it made Romo the highest-paid game analyst in TV.

For a while, the bet looked smart. CBS had locked in its biggest broadcast star while NFL rights were getting more valuable every year.

Over time, the mood shifted. Some viewers said Romo talked too much. Others felt his big predictions had faded and his style had become hit-or-miss. Still, none of that ended his time at CBS. The arrest did.

    The Arrest That Changed Everything

    Here are the key dates:

    • July 23: Romo was stopped on Interstate 43 in Milwaukee after playing in a golf event. Police said he did poorly on field sobriety tests, and he was arrested for operating while intoxicated (OWI).
    • July 31: CBS placed him on indefinite leave. Watt took over the lead analyst role.
    • September 1: Romo pleaded no contest to a first-offense OWI. In Wisconsin, that is a civil offense. His penalties included a license suspension, a fine, an alcohol assessment, and an ignition interlock device.
    • October 2: CBS announced the split.

After his plea, Romo shared a public statement. He took responsibility and said he had developed an unhealthy reliance on alcohol. He also said he hoped to return to CBS one day.

That did not happen. Many people in the industry had already predicted he would not be back.

In his statement after the split, Romo said he was proud of his nine years at the network. He also said he planned to take a break, focus on his health and family, and then look at what comes next.

    Getting Paid Not to Work

Romo has already earned a fortune. His years with the Cowboys brought in well over $100 million in salary. His CBS deal then made him the top-paid game analyst on television.

Now he may receive one more big check from CBS. This time, there are no game plans, no production meetings, and no flights from city to city.

CBS has moved on, and Watt has the seat. Romo gets time at home.

    What Happens Next?

Here is what to watch in the coming weeks:

    • The settlement amount. It may stay private, but leaks are common in sports media.
    • Romo’s next move. He says he wants a break first. Other networks and streaming platforms may still be interested later.
    • CBS’s booth. Watt, Nantz, and Wolfson will be under the spotlight as the season goes on.

    Final Thoughts

Tony Romo went from rookie broadcaster to the highest-paid analyst in TV. Now his CBS story ends with a quiet settlement and a very big question mark about the final number.

Whatever the total turns out to be, it will likely be a lot of money for games he never has to call.
