On 12 October, Homeland Security Investigations agents executed a judge-authorized search warrant at Representative Ilhan Omar’s Washington, D.C. home. The Justice Department confirmed the search formed part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation; sources familiar with the matter say it concerns immigration paperwork from Omar’s arrival in the United States as a child refugee. Omar denies any immigration fraud and has described the investigation as political intimidation. No charges have been filed.

A day later, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro confirmed a separate inquiry: her office is examining Omar’s congressional financial disclosures. There is no public evidence the home search was connected to the financial filings. The disclosures are worth examining on their own, because for more than a year they appeared to tell two completely different stories about Omar’s wealth.

Ilhan Omar's disclosure timeline: a $44 million claim, business stakes once filed at up to $30 million, and amended total assets of $18,004–$95,000.

Where the $44 Million Claim Came From

In January 2026, President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that Omar had “left Somalia with NOTHING, and is now reportedly worth more than 44 million dollars,” and said federal authorities and Congress were investigating her finances. No congressional filing supports a $44 million figure. What the filings did contain — for a time — was a valuation of up to $30 million for her husband’s business interests, which is where the story actually begins.

    The Disclosures, Year by Year

Omar, born in Mogadishu in 1982, fled Somalia’s civil war, spent years in a Kenyan refugee camp and resettled in the US as a teenager. She won a Minnesota House seat in 2016 and was elected to Congress in 2018, representing the Minneapolis-based 5th District.

2018 (candidate filing): No reportable assets. Her income was her Minnesota state representative salary ($45,722 for the prior year) plus more than $25,000 in speaking fees. Liabilities: student loans of $15,001–$50,000 and a car loan of $10,000–$15,000 — in other words, a negative net worth. Members’ filings are public documents, and the same system produces the modest balance sheets seen in the disclosures behind profiles such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s.

2019–2023 filings: Still no reportable assets initially, then a modest retirement account. As a member of the House, Omar earns the standard salary of $174,000. She married political consultant Tim Mynett in March 2020; his firm, E Street Group, received nearly $3 million from her campaign during the 2020 cycle before the campaign ended the relationship that November. Mynett later became involved in two ventures: Rose Lake Capital, an investment firm, and eStCru, a California wine business.

Filed May 2024 (covering 2023): Mynett’s Rose Lake stake was valued at $1–$1,000; his eStCru stake at $15,001–$50,000. Combined: at most about $51,000.

Filed May 2025 (covering 2024): Rose Lake jumped to $5 million–$25 million and eStCru to $1 million–$5 million — a combined $6 million to $30 million. (Disclosures report ranges, not exact values, and these were asset ranges for the businesses’ interests, not a verified calculation of household net worth.) Rose Lake’s website at one point claimed $60 billion in assets under management — the firm’s own claim, and in any case money managed for clients is not money owned by its partners.

The Amendment: $30 Million Becomes $95,000

In spring 2026, Omar amended the 2024 filing. Both of Mynett’s stakes were revalued to “None”, and the couple’s total reported assets fell to a range of $18,004 to $95,000. Her office blamed an accounting error: according to her attorney, an accountant had supplied figures based on the businesses’ gross assets without adequately deducting their liabilities; net of liabilities, the stakes had no positive value. The amendment also changed Rose Lake’s reported 2024 partnership income from “None” to $100,001–$1 million; her attorney told the Minnesota Star Tribune that Mynett’s actual income from the businesses was $216,200.

Her next annual report, filed 13 May 2026 and covering 2025, kept both stakes at no value, listed roughly $20,000–$125,000 in reportable assets and $30,000–$100,000 in student-loan and credit-card liabilities.

Omar had publicly rejected the rich-list framing all along. In February 2025 she dismissed an online claim of an $83 million fortune, noting her $174,000 salary, that she owns no stock and no home, and that she is still repaying student debt. After the multimillion-dollar filing surfaced, she argued on TikTok that the values reflected the businesses’ overall assessments, not her husband’s individual share.

What Has Been Decided — and What Has Not

Two oversight tracks have produced opposite headlines, and the distinction matters:

    • In February 2026, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer requested records from Rose Lake Capital and eStCru, citing the dramatic increases in their reported values.
    • In September 2026, the nonpartisan Office of Congressional Conduct voted 5–1 to recommend dismissing the misconduct allegations over the disclosures, finding no substantial reason to believe Omar had reported false or incomplete financial information in violation of the rules.
    • In October 2026, Pirro confirmed federal prosecutors are examining the disclosures anyway; a House watchdog’s recommendation does not bind the Justice Department. No charges or findings of financial wrongdoing have been announced.

Congressional disclosure fights are a recurring feature of Washington — the filings behind net-worth profiles of figures from Karoline Leavitt to Lindsey Graham are routinely combed for exactly these kinds of swings. Omar’s case is unusual for the size of the correction: a roughly $30 million paper fortune that, once liabilities were counted, became less than $95,000.

What the record supports today is narrower than either side’s rhetoric. The $44 million figure has no basis in the filings. The $30 million figure appeared in an official document and was then withdrawn by the filer as an error. The watchdog recommended dismissal; federal prosecutors say they are still looking. Until one of those processes produces a finding, Ilhan Omar’s documented net worth remains what her current paperwork says it is: a congressional salary, some student debt, and household assets in the tens of thousands.

Sources and notes: Disclosure figures from Omar’s House financial disclosure reports and her spring 2026 amendment, as reported by the Minnesota Star Tribune and Celebrity Net Worth’s examination of the filings. Search and investigation details from the Wall Street Journal, the Associated Press and Fox News reporting (October 2026). All parties’ characterizations of the investigations are attributed; no finding of wrongdoing by Omar has been made by any court or agency.
