Early Life
Elisabetta Canalis was born on 12 September 1978 in Sassari, Sardinia, to teacher Bruna and radiologist Cesare; her brother Luigi is also a radiologist. After graduating from high school in Sassari, she moved to Milan to study at the University of Milan, but dropped out after landing her first television job in 1999.
Career
Canalis began her television career in 1999 as a dancer on the Canale 5 satirical show “Striscia la notizia,” remaining until 2002. She later starred in the second season of the sitcom “Love Bugs,” co-hosted the final season of the singing competition Festivalbar in 2007, starred on the sitcom “Medici miei” and hosted coverage of the Trofeo Birra Moretti football tournament in 2008, and replaced Elena Santarelli as host of the Italian version of MTV’s “Total Request Live” in 2009.
In 2010 she had recurring roles in the Italian series “Fratelli Benvenuti” and the American series “Leverage,” in its third season. The following year she competed in the 13th season of the US “Dancing with the Stars” with professional partner Valentin Chmerkovskiy, finishing as the second celebrity eliminated, and co-hosted the Italian Song Festival with Gianni Morandi and Belen Rodriguez — a role she repeated in 2012. Later in the decade she had a main role in the second season of “L’isola di Pietro.”
On film, Canalis made a cameo in the 2005 comedy “Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo,” appeared in the Christmas comedy “Natale a New York” (2006), played a nun in “Virgin Territory” (2007), and starred opposite Alessandro Siani in the 2008 romantic comedy “La seconda volta non si scorda mai.” As a model, she posed for the Max nude calendar in 2003, was a spokeswoman and runway model for Hollywood Milano from 2006 to 2009, and later represented Pantene and Auping, appeared in Spanish Vogue and Arabian Harper’s Bazaar, and graced the cover of Vanity Fair multiple times.
Personal Life
Canalis was previously in relationships with footballers Christian Vieri and Reginaldo, and filmmaker Gabriele Muccino. From 2009 to 2011 she dated actor and filmmaker George Clooney. In 2014 she married Brian Perri, an orthopedic surgeon; the couple had a daughter, Skyler, the following year. In the summer of 2023, Canalis said she and Perri were separated and that she was dating Romanian kickboxer Giorgian Cimpeanu.
Canalis’ Italian-to-international career echoes other European models who crossed into American television, including Hailey Clauson, Natasha Poly and Selita Ebanks.
