Atticus Shaffer is an American actor and YouTuber born June 19, 1998, best known for playing Brick Heck on ABC’s The Middle from 2009 to 2018. He has a net worth of $4 million and appeared in all 215 episodes of the show. Shaffer also voiced Edgar in Frankenweenie and Ono on The Lion Guard, and lives with type four osteogenesis imperfecta.

    Early Life and Family Background

Atticus Ronald Shaffer was born on June 19, 1998, in Santa Clarita, California, to parents Ron and Debbie Shaffer. His parents named him after the fictional character Atticus Finch from “To Kill a Mockingbird”, reflecting their appreciation for literature and strong moral values.

Growing up, Atticus was home-schooled by his mother, who exposed him to various art forms ranging from museum exhibits to reading storybooks aloud in character voices. This creative upbringing helped shape his natural talent for acting and voice work. His paternal grandmother was of Italian descent, and his maternal grandmother’s ancestry is Polish. Today, he’s learning to speak Polish to connect with his ancestral roots.

    Living with Osteogenesis Imperfecta

Shaffer has type four osteogenesis imperfecta, a condition involving a defect in collagen that causes fragile bones and short stature. He stands 4 feet 8 inches (142 cm) tall. Despite initial discouraging medical predictions, his parents refused to accept limitations.

When Atticus was born, doctors at an unfamiliar hospital told his mother to accept that her son would be in a wheelchair for life. His mother, a strong-willed Polish woman, wouldn’t accept that diagnosis and sought out hospitals familiar with osteogenesis imperfecta. The condition causes bones to form at a later time, making them more fragile than typical bones.

Rather than viewing his condition as a disability, Atticus sees it as just one aspect of who he is. He won the 2010 Media Access Diversity Award for an actor with a physical or emotional disability, recognizing his positive representation in entertainment.

    Career Beginnings and Breakthrough

Atticus started his entertainment journey at age seven after completing a year-long fundraising campaign for Shriner’s Hospital in Los Angeles. His mother thought he had a cute voice and could potentially work as a book-on-tape reader or cartoon character. After meeting with a talent manager who wanted to sign him for both theatrical and voice work, his career took off quickly.

At age eight, Shaffer landed his first television role on the CBS sitcom “The Class” in 2007, playing Jonah in the 18th episode. He later appeared in “Days of Our Lives,” “Out of Jimmy’s Head,” and “Leaving Barstow”. In 2008, he shared a memorable opening scene with Will Smith in the superhero film “Hancock,” playing a boy at a bus stop.

The Middle: Nine Seasons as Brick Heck

Shaffer is most known for his role as Brick Heck in The Middle, which he played throughout the series’ entire nine-season run from 2009 to 2018. Brick is the youngest of the three Heck children, highly intelligent and smarter than most people his age, with a love for reading and an ongoing fascination with fonts.

In a January 2013 Wired magazine interview, Shaffer said his role as Brick was similar to his own life, as he’s also a big reader and nerds out over the weirdest stuff. Brick’s characterization, including his idiosyncratic repetition of words and phrases at the end of sentences, is based on Justin Heisler, the son of The Middle co-creator Eileen Heisler.

The show’s success spanned 215 episodes across nine seasons, making it one of ABC’s most enduring family sitcoms. Working alongside Patricia Heaton and Neil Flynn, Atticus developed his craft while still in his formative years.

Voice Acting Career and Film Work

Beyond live-action roles, Atticus built an extensive voice acting resume. In 2012, he voiced Edgar “E” Gore in Tim Burton’s stop-motion animated film “Frankenweenie,” which earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature. He received a 2013 Annie Award nomination for voice acting in an animated feature for this role.

From 2016 to 2019, Atticus provided the voice of Ono the egret on Disney Junior’s “The Lion Guard,” appearing in 74 episodes. He reprised the role in TV movies including “The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar” (2015), “The Lion Guard: The Rise of Scar” (2017), and “The Lion Guard: Battle for the Pride Lands” (2019).

Other voice credits include Albert Glass on “Fish Hooks” (2010-2014), Peedee Fryman on “Steven Universe” (2013-2018), Grumpy Toad on “Pete the Cat” (2017-2022), and Melvin on “Harvey Girls Forever!” (2018-2020).

    Awards and Recognition

Throughout his career, Atticus earned multiple nominations and honors. He was nominated for the 2011 Young Artist Award for outstanding young ensemble in a TV series for The Middle. In 2013, he won the BTVA Voice Acting Award for Best Male Vocal Performance by a Child.

He received nominations for the 2016 BTVA Special/DVD Voice Acting Award for Best Vocal Ensemble in “The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar” and the 2017 BTVA Television Voice Acting Award for Best Vocal Ensemble in a New Television Series for “The Lion Guard”.

Transition to Directing and Warner Bros. Training

As Atticus became an adult, he studied all departments involved in TV and movie production, making several award-winning short films. He was invited to be a student in the Warner Bros. Director’s Workshop, an intensive program that equips professionals with real-world know-how of sitting in the director’s chair and vetting them to direct Warner Bros. television projects. He graduated the program with honors.

While he still has a desire to continue acting in both theatrical and voice work, he now has a great passion for directing, writing, and producing. His goal is to create projects bearing his name on the director card.

Net Worth and Income Sources in 2025

Atticus Shaffer has a net worth of $4 million. His wealth comes from multiple income streams built over nearly two decades in entertainment.

His primary earnings source was The Middle, where he appeared in all 215 episodes over nine seasons. Voice acting roles in major productions like Frankenweenie, The Lion Guard, and multiple animated series provided substantial additional income.

He has earned his wealth from his acting and voice acting career, as well as from his social media and gaming activities. He also has endorsement deals and sponsorships from various brands and companies. Today, his YouTube channel and Twitch streaming contribute to his ongoing revenue.

    YouTube, Twitch, and Content Creation

Shaffer has official YouTube and Twitch video gaming pages titled “AtticusShafferVlog,” with the Twitch channel announced in December 2019. He plays games including The Long Dark and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

During his appearance on the podcast “Life & Laughs,” Shaffer explained his YouTube channel didn’t initially start as a creative venture but began with a humorous video of him eating a Cupid’s chili dog while on The Middle. From there, he used his channel to share gaming content, interact with fans through Q&As, speak about his devotion to his religion, and share various recipes.

His YouTube channel chronicles everything from trips to the grocery store to behind-the-scenes anecdotes about filming The Middle. In October 2023, he showed fans where he filmed The Middle at Warner Bros. Ranch, starting a “Behind the Scenes” series.

Personal Life, Faith, and Current Activities

Shaffer lives in Acton, California. He is a Christian and as of 2018 had a daily Bible study with his mother, alternating between the Old and New Testaments. He views his position in entertainment as an opportunity to be a role model, questioning why there weren’t better role models when he was younger.

Shaffer credits his faith for keeping him grounded, saying he’s in his position because he let God take over. As of 2025, he’s 26 years old and continues balancing his creative pursuits with his personal values.

He enjoys his time when not working by writing, reading, watching TV shows and movies, listening to music, gaming, and studying topics of interest. He’s learning to speak Polish, his ancestral language.

    Interesting Facts About Atticus Shaffer

His unique name carries literary significance, connecting him to one of fiction’s most principled characters. He has a passion for filming stop-motion movies using Lego blocks, which he often shares with fans.

In 2020, he guest-starred on the Netflix series “Never Have I Ever”, showing he remains active in on-screen work when opportunities align with his interests. He’s also an unapologetic nerd who proudly embraces his interests in science fiction, history, and Christian apologetics.

His social media handle “TACTICALHOBBIT1” reflects his playful personality and love for fantasy literature. He describes himself as a “Christian, Creative, and Tactical Hobbit” on his platforms.
